Simultaneous night dives are expected to be made in several countries, including Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Iceland, Finland, Svalbard, Estonia, Egypt, and the Faroe Islands. Dive communities in other countries have also expressed an interest in participating in this year’s Divers’ Night.

The first Diversnight arrangement was organized in Norway in 2005; attracting 351 scuba divers to participate in the country-wide event. These dives took place in 40 different locations, the northernmost in Nordkapp and all the way down to southern Lindesnes.

In 2006 the participants had increased to 889 people diving from 93 locations throughout Scandinavia.  In 2007 the number of participants had increased even more and 1859 divers got in the water at 138 various locations.

Diversnight 2008 had 2183 divers in water ,178 different places. Those dives took place in Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Egypt, France, Belgium, The Faroe Islands, Indonesia, Norway and Sweden

Diversnight 2009 was the biggest event so far where we had 2749 divers in water.

Every year this event is organized locally by individuals who support Divers’ Night by providing enjoyable diving, a positive environment and homemade cakes; truly showing off all the great aspects of the hobby.

Why?

The main reason for Diversnight is to get together and have fun, regardless of dive club or country. We get the chance to show the world what a great hobby we have, hopefully attracting more people to not only to diving in general, but to diving activities in the winter, when it might be a little cold and dark.

The idea originated during a club get-together one Friday evening in November, 2005. It sounded like it would be fun to have a night dive taking place all over Norway at the same time. Four weeks later the planning, preparation and execution of the first Divers’ Night was finished and 351 people had dove from 40 different locations in Norway.

Who?

The four previous events have been made possible thanks to an exemplary group of organizers and their effort to create great dive happenings. Anybody can join that group and initiate a local dive within the Divers’ Night. Whether you are acting alone or representing a dive club or scuba shop you are all welcome to arrange a night dive, just check out the registratin button at www.diversnight.com. Helpful information regarding organizing an event will be published on www.diversnight.com as well as sent to all registered organizers.

‘Cake’ has been a keyword in the past Diversnights arrangements; to bring people together for a chat and enjoy each other’s company as well as something tasty in a chilly December evening. Lots of initiative and positive attitudes have made these past three events possible, and I hope to see the wonderful people who organized the dives return to join us again this year. Their outstanding effort is highly appreciated!

World Record?

Our hopes are to set a world record this year. It is a great opportunity to show even more people what  we do, what scuba diving can offer, what a great community we have, and that our hobby is safe! The media has been very supportive in helping us showing our passion, and that one doesn’t need 25 degrees warm water in order to enjoy diving.

The following must be present on the dive site for matters of safety:

     Surface support; a diver in gear (PADI Rescue or equivalent*)

     Emergency Management Plan in the unlikely event of an emergency

     The diving flag must be raised

     Divers must be logged in and out of the water

     No ‘solo diving’

     All divers must be certified , with night diving experience*

     Local emergency services should be notified of the event

     All divers must fill out a liability release form

*The surface support diver may stick his or her head underwater at the designated time in order to be a participant in the night dive, but must immediately return to the surface and maintain his or her role

**Any diver without night diving experience must be accompanied by a Divemaster or Instructor, and have received relevant information and instruction of light communication prior to the dive.

There will be a lot of divers on site, and it is important that safety will be taken care of. Make sure you have enough time, in order for all divers to have the time to fill in the papers and get a good briefing of the dive site and general dive arrangements.

It is a good idea if the divers leave the surface before 8:10 pm. Then it will be a lot easier for the dive buddies to stay together, and they don’t have to swim in layers:-)

Registration?

Arranger, or the dive master on site must make sure to send an SMS containing the number of divers in water at site to “Diversnight phone”. (Make sure to write the location’s name as well, so we can find it in our list)

As soon as we get the number, I will find someone who isn’t diving to update the web site so that the press can easily find the correct number at all time.

“Diversnight” phone nr is: +47 988 66 917

Costs?

The diving conducted this day is meant to be free of charge for the divers. Though, if you are using boat or so, its of course ok to take charge to cover the expenses.

Baking cakes have in the previous years been made voluntarily and a lot of good recipies have been presented!! Some dive sites also contacted local sponsors to facilitate some hot drinks for cold divers after the dive

Prizes?

Also this year we have received a lot of great sponsoring!! All divers and helpers on land can win these prizes!!

In order for all participants to have the opportunity to win, its important that all names and addresses are registered on the website after the dive.

The registration of divesites is an online form.

The drawing of prizes will be at December 23rd 2010, and the prizes will be sent in the beginning of January.

The list of all prizes is to be found at the website: www.diversnight.com

Press?

We encourage all arrangers of Diversnight to make contact with the press in order to make them write about each local event and the diving all year around.

You might also make contact with national press, we will also contact the local press!

Perhaps we will encourage more people to become divers?

And maybe new diving clubs and dive groups will be made also this year?
