6th December 2007 at 20.07 (Norwegian time) it is time for a new night dive.
This year there will properly be conducted dives through out all of Scandinavian.
Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Island, and Finland.
In 2005 there where 351 divers participating in a country wide night dive. These dives took place at
40 different locations through out the country, from Nordkap in the north to Lindesnes in the south.
Night dive 2006 had participation from 889 divers which dived from 93 different
locations in Norway, Denmark and Sweden.
All the organizing parties had arranged coffee and cake, very good diving and excellent social settings.
Why
The main idea with the night dive is to have a social event across clubs and country boundaries.
We will have the opportunity to show the world what a fantastic hobby we have and encourage more people to dive. We also get to show that scuba diving is an year round hobby,
even though it might a bit dark and cold.
The idea was formed when we where gathered for a dive talk and a beer in November 2005.
It could be a lot of fun to have a simultaneously night dive through out Norway.
Within 4 weeks the planning and completion of the dive had taken place,
and as mentioned earlier there where 351 participating divers through out 40 different locations in Norway.
Who
The previous two arrangements was a success thanks to a range of remarkable people who did all they could to make this an extraordinary arrangement.
Every body can arrange a local night dive. Private people, clubs and diving centers are all welcome to participate in organizing night dives.. Send a mail to tone@diversnight.com if you want to help organize.
All information will be accessible at www.diversnight.com, but information will also be send by mail.
Cake has been a very good cue word at the previous 2 events;
to have some thing to eat is a good excuse to socialize.
Good team spirit and many enthusiastic people made it possible to arrange it the previous years
and I hope they will participate this year as well because they did an excellent job!!
Guinness records?
This year we hope to set a record and an application to Guinness World of Records has already been submitted. I do hope we succeed. I will get back with the details when I know further. This is a great opportunity to show other people what it is we do and what scuba diving has to offer. The social life divers have together and that we conduct diving in a safe manner.
Also we get to show that the water temperature doesn’t have to be 25°C.
At the dive site the safety must be in place:
- Surface crew, divers with gear. Rescue or equivalent.*
- There must be an emergency plan in case of emergency.
- Dive flag must be raised.
- Divers must be logged in and out of the water.
- Solo diving should not be carried out.
- All divers must be certified, with night diving experience.**
- Inform the local emergency response services about the event.
- All divers must fill out a declaration stating that they dive at their own responsibility and with information about next of kin.
* Divers on shore duty can submerge their face at the given time to participate in the record attempt but must immediately there after return to shore and remain standby.
** If the diver does not posses the experience the dive must be conducted with a divemaster or instructor as buddy and the necessary instructions use of light and signals must take place prior to the dive..
There are going to be many divers at each location, and it's of utmost importance that
everyone is counted for and taken care of by the divemaster(s) on each location.
The security is our first priority!
Be sure to have plenty of time to fill out the papers and do a briefing on the site and the dive.
It can be an advantage for the divers to begin before 20.07 in this way it will be easier for dive teams to remain together and avoid swimming on top of each other.
Registrations?
The dive managers are encouraged to send a SMS with the amount of divers after the dive,
this way we can register and inform the press during the event.
SMS can be send to no. +47 95 808 611
Cost?
Participation in the night dive must as starting point be free but if you use a boat or other things,
getting cover for the costs to gas and other is ok.
Last year baking cakes was a joint project and many good recopies was presented!!
At some locations sponsors supplied hot drinks to the cold divers.
Prize?
This year, as was the case in the previous years, there will be drawn winners between both the divers and surface support personnel, to a verity of good prizes, thus it is important that all names and addresses are submitted after finishing the dive. A complete list of the prizes can be found at PRIZES
Press?
We encourage all who organize night dive to contact the local press to inform of the event and the local diving. Feel free to contact the country wide press as well but press releases will be issued.
The press release can be read HERE. Feel free to add a local contact.
Perhaps we will be able to attract new divers this year..??
And perhaps new scuba clubs can be formed as well?

Tone’s tips..
Press;
Check with the local dive center and/or instructer to see if they will sponser coffee cups. Challenge one from the local press in getting a dive certification and participating in the night dive at the same time covering it..
Prizes;
Contact dive centers, cake suppliers, suppliers of hot drinks, hardware stores or others and see if they want to sponsor some prizes or cake and hot drinks for the cold divers.
Send a mail with information about name, address, phone no., dive site, if it is a diver of surface support as quickly after the dive as possible. The draw of the prizes will take place with in a week after the dive.
Safety;
Perhaps the local dive center will be helpful with dive flag, O2 box, surface personnel, dive manager or other things..
Registration;
The more people to send me a SMS the better. The website will continuously be updated so that the press and all other interested can follow the development in the number of divers participating.
It is important that I get the names of all participating divided in divers and surface personnel. In this way we can quickly get the prizes shipped.
Log keeping;
During briefing the divers will be informed to call out their name when leaving and reentering the surface. In a dark night “I” can be many persons. Make sure that every one is logged correctly.
